Real Patriotism is not political. It's about fellowship - not followship!
Though politicians have distorted the term, "Patriots" are not the 'loyalists' or 'nationalists' of a country - nor have they been so synonymous in any historical moment defined by "Patriots". In every such occasion, they were the radicals; the rebels; the one's who rejected the status quo & challenged the authority of an oppressive regime or empire; the ones who demanded change and declared liberty & an end to tyranny; the ones who rejected religious, nationalistic, or economic oppression. They are the ones who questioned authority - and stood up to declare & reclaim their natural born liberty. Patriots are not loyalists or nationalists, but a fellowship of radical free-thinkers & rebels against the status quo of oppressive rule.
The word "patriot" stems from the Greek "patriōtēs" meaning "fellow countryman". Over the past 100 years, especially in the US, through nationalistic political rhetoric the word has been muddied up to seem more "country" than "fellow man". This however, is a perversion of the origin and historical use of the word. In every historical conflict where one side is defined as "Patriots" - that is the side that is fighting against the oppression of their individual rights, imposed on them by the jingoists, nationalists and loyalists of a nation or empire.
